Push Toolbar Spyware Profile
Title: Push Toolbar
Also Known as: searchv , hijacker
Severity scale:
Push Toolbar is a spyware program disguised as a search enhancing toolbar. It was first discovered on February 1 of 2004. It is distributed by Hamilton Global Services, Inc. and is linked to the website http://toolbar.push.com/.
The Push Toolbar is downloaded on your computer via ActiveX. It is technically speaking a drive-by download, but you do see a security warning window. On this security warning window, there is no “unknown certification,” so it would seem to be safe to download. There is no End User Licensing Agreement during installation, but it can be found at their website here http://toolbar.push.com/legal/eula.php.
The Push Toolbar for the most part acts like a minor level adware program. It displays pop-up ads and its buttons will link you to its affiliate sites—which are most likely harmful as well. However, the Push Toolbar has spyware capabilities through keystroke logging. It sends this information to a remote server, presumably to deliver targeted advertising.
If you have the Push Toolbar, you should remove it. It has no real benefit to the user. It is highly annoying with its pop-up ads, and is considered to be dangerous to your privacy for the spyware ability. You should remove it with SpyZooka.
