RXToolbar Spyware Profile
Title: RXToolbar
Also Known as: Adware.RXToolbar, Adware-RXToolbar
Severity scale:
RXToolbar is a spyware data miner disguised as a toolbar browser add-on. It was first discovered on April 8 of 2005. It was originally published through www.searchenginebar.com, but that site has been removed.
Currently, RXToolbar is distributed through www.rx2.com. It claims to be an update of the original. The language on the new site matches the old, in that both contain the phrase, “All search engines have huge amounts of unstructured information, you enter a term and they generate results. The RX Bar has knowledge. It knows which websites are important and what’s related to what you are currently viewing,” and many others.
According to the new site, RXToolbar allows you to search from anywhere on the Web, block pop-ups, clean out cookies, history and cache, listen to the radio from the toolbar, chat with other users of the RXToolbar, get updates by RSS feed, and “get access to useful links and RX Toolbar updates.”
Thanks to the Google toolbar, searching from any web page is already possible. Pop-up blockers are standard in most browsers. Also, most up-to-date browsers will clear their temporary files automatically when you close them, or the option is at least available. In short, every feature of RX Toolbar is either already on your computer or is easily obtainable. It claims to have something to do with search engine optimization, but there isn’t any feature on it that seems to have any relevance.
The only thing “new” that RX Toolbar offers is monitoring your browsing habits and generating pop-up ads from this information. It should be removed from your computer. SpyZooka is the best program for doing this.
