Certpdef.dll Error Problems Solved Today

The certpdef.dll is the default policy module for Microsoft Windows NT’s Certificate Server. The DLL enables the Certificate Server to issue mail certificates that can be used by Microsoft Outlook 98. Certificate Server is a customizable server application that can issue, create and renew digital certificates. It provides certificates that allow secure communication to Web Sites.

It improves the flexibility and security of web- based programs and was implemented to organize X.509-compatible certificates.

X.509 is a standard ITU-T requirement for PKI or Public Key Infrastructure. It specifies a standard format for certification path validation algorithm and public key certificates. This recommendation defines and establishes identity and allows secure communications.

The certificates are used for public keys security and are also used by authentication programs that include server to client authentication under SSL or Secure Sockets Layer protocol and Secure / Multipurpose Internet Mail.

The certpdef.dll file enables Microsoft Certificate Server to function under a default policy so that certificates can be validated and authenticated based on the policy on the Server. Certificate Server contains interlocking sub-components that includes an engine that has support modules, a database and web certificate enrollment.

The certpdef.dll module processes and receives PKI certificate requests, defines and validates the requests and issues a certificate in line with PKI’s policy for security. It renews and revokes certificates or publishes the certificate to different locations.

A problem encountered with the certpdef.dll file is when Outlook cannot read the certificates by Certificate Server. This is because the program is sensitive to the input in the memory usages field. The certpdef.dll module that is bundled with the Option Pack for Microsoft Windows only has Key Encipherment and not a digital signature. To correct this problem, you would need to get a hold of the current Service Pack for Windows NT.

What is a DLL?

Your operating system comes pre-installed with Microsoft DLL’s and most third party programs also install DLL’s.

DLL (Dynamic Link Library) is Microsoft’s implementation of the shared library concept. Meaning there’s a DLL library on your computer and each DLL can be shared among different Microsoft and third party programs. This shared library method helps your computer run faster by having fewer operations running at the same time.

When a DLL is missing or corrupt it may show an error message and programs may fail or crash.

Because DLL’s are shared, one missing or corrupt DLL may affect multiple programs on your computer.
