Clcd16.dll Error Problems Solved Today

The clcd16.dll module is a part of the first version of SafeDisc. SafeDisc is a copy protection program designed to protect contents of commercially available compact discs. The clcd16.dll file is often found on PC game discs that are protected by SafeDisc. It is one of the most common CD protections you may come across.

Developed by two leading companies C-Dilla and MacroVision SafeDisc was made in order to stop destructive hackers and commercial pirates from developing illegal copies to sell on the black market.

A combination of authenticating digital signatures embedded on the disk as well as an encryption wrapper that secures the contents of the CD is the protection method used by SafeDisc.

A CD protected with SafeDisc will have the following files on the CD:

* 00000001.tmp

* clcd16.dll

* clcd32.dll

* clokspl.exe

* dplayerx.dll

* <game_name>.exe

* <game_name>.icd

The clcd16.dll file is an important component of the SafeDisc protection. Along with the other files the clcd16.dll encrypts and decrypts security codes assigned by the SafeDisc protection method on discs.

On the CD the <game_name>.exe file contains the SafeDisc protection whereas the <game_name>.icd file contains the original game executable but in an encrypted form. It also includes within it some anti-disassembling procedures, which make it difficult to trace the code.

The clcd16.dll module is a function called to assign a 16 bit security code to the disc which is being done every time the disc is inserted to a CD drive.

SafeDisc divides the .exe file into two parts; the first one stores only the decrypting information that is used to decrypt the second part and contains no important code. The .exe executable is just a loader which decrypts and subsequently loads the protected game program in the encrypted .icd file. The most important file of the SafeDisc protection – the clokspl.exe – then calls the clcd16.dll module to calculate the decryption key based on a number of conditions.

The calculation result is then XORed with the current date which means that the code is not the same everyday. Ultimately, the second part of the .exe file decrypts a small routine in the memory that contains the address for calling the dplayerx.dll module and the correct decryption key.

What is a DLL?

Your operating system comes pre-installed with Microsoft DLL’s and most third party programs also install DLL’s.

DLL (Dynamic Link Library) is Microsoft’s implementation of the shared library concept. Meaning there’s a DLL library on your computer and each DLL can be shared among different Microsoft and third party programs. This shared library method helps your computer run faster by having fewer operations running at the same time.

When a DLL is missing or corrupt it may show an error message and programs may fail or crash.

Because DLL’s are shared, one missing or corrupt DLL may affect multiple programs on your computer.
