Solution for Cocpyinf.dll Error Problems

The cocpyinf.dll module is a co-installer designed to copy INF files required by the Setup during installation. There are two methods that can be used to copy INF files, and both of them include the manipulation of the codes embedded in the module cocpyinf.dll.

When installing device drivers, it is sometimes necessary to copy INF files. By copying these files, the Setup will be able to find them without repetitively displaying the message prompts. Some devices have multiple functions embedded in the base INF files. The multifunction file might copy the INF files for the individual function of the device, so that Setup can find these without prompting the user each time it installs one of the device’s functions.

The method of copying INF files includes the manipulation of the source codes of the module cocpyinf.dll, found in the cocpyinf.c file of the WDK directory. The module cocpyinf.dll can copy the INF files if the function SetupCopyOEMInf is added. SetupCopyOEMInf replicates a specified .inf file to the INF directory in the system.

For Windows XP and later versions, the INF file included in the Windows Driver Kit contains the INF CopyINF directive. This technique causes the specified INF files to be copied to the target system.

Both of the methods will install the appropriate catalog file, along with the INF file. The INF file will then be given a unique name, to avoid overwriting any other INF files and to be overwritten by others of the same nature. These methods will also retain the path to the source medium from which device files are to be copied. Lastly, the methods will ensure compatibility with future versions of the Windows Operating System.

What is a DLL?

Your operating system comes pre-installed with Microsoft DLL’s and most third party programs also install DLL’s.

DLL (Dynamic Link Library) is Microsoft’s implementation of the shared library concept. Meaning there’s a DLL library on your computer and each DLL can be shared among different Microsoft and third party programs. This shared library method helps your computer run faster by having fewer operations running at the same time.

When a DLL is missing or corrupt it may show an error message and programs may fail or crash.

Because DLL’s are shared, one missing or corrupt DLL may affect multiple programs on your computer.
