The Symantec Decomposer program splits archived file contents for analysis during the virus scanning process. The decomposer engine is used with the Symantec client security and the Symantec antivirus software. The Symantec process file initiates the dec2rtf.dll module when it comes across a zipped archive during the file scan process.
The dec2rtf.dll module ‘decomposes’ the archived file to enable the software to scan for malicious content within.
The Symantec Decomposer program should be updated using the Decomposer update tool to remove any possible vulnerability in the Symantec Client Security or Symantec Antivirus software. When the user runs the decomposer update tool, it obtains the latest version of the Symantec Antivirus modules.
After obtaining them, the decomposer tool determines the folder that contains the Symantec Decomposer program using the available information stored in the registry. It then stops and closes the services that depend on the Decomposer program file, this is to ensure that decomposer files are not held or locked.
The Decomposer tool deletes the decomposer program files one by one and replaces them with new dynamic linked library files including the dec2rtf.dll module. The decomposer restarts the decomposer services that it previously stopped.

What is a DLL?
Your operating system comes pre-installed with Microsoft DLL’s and most third party programs also install DLL’s.
DLL (Dynamic Link Library) is Microsoft’s implementation of the shared library concept. Meaning there’s a DLL library on your computer and each DLL can be shared among different Microsoft and third party programs. This shared library method helps your computer run faster by having fewer operations running at the same time.
When a DLL is missing or corrupt it may show an error message and programs may fail or crash.
Because DLL’s are shared, one missing or corrupt DLL may affect multiple programs on your computer.
