Dpwsock.dll Computer Error Solution

DirectPlay is high-level communication software that makes it easy to connect games over the Internet, modem link or network. It features a set of tools that allow players to connect in session or create new session and wait for people to join it. Each session has only one host which is the application that creates it.

The dpwsock.dll DLL enables multiplayer gaming across any network and offers drivers that allow DirectPlay to interact with other instances of it on remote systems. The DLL provides four standard service providers such as serial cable, modem, IPX and TCP/IP connections.

Once the service providers have been enumerated they can be displayed to the user in several ways allowing identification of the desired connection type.

The dpwsock.dll module initializes with the CreateNewDirectPlay function by creating a Session Object and specifies various parameters such as maximum number of players and session title. However if the game is already pre-existing all the available sessions are first listed and exposed by the current connection allowing the user to select the desired game to join.

After creating a game a Player must be created by using the CreatePlayer function of the dpwsock.dll file which will use the identity during the upcoming game. Various parameters must also be specified when the player is initialized and trap the handle that is returned. The function will return a unique ID for the local player within the session.

The function EnumPlayers is then called. Once a player has joined a session the player may send messages with any of the connected players through the Send function. Once the game is started messages can be sent between any and all of the players involved. The format of thee messages is user-defined and can be customized to suit the needs of any particular program.

The functions DPSEND_GUARANTTED, DPSEND_ENCRYPTED and DPSEND_SIGNED are the functions used for this purpose. Sending a guaranteed message can take more than 3 times longer than a non-guaranteed one so only use guaranteed sending for important messages (like text).

However any message received as guaranteed is free of corruption because the dpwsock.dll file performs integrity checks on them. The Receive function has similar syntax to the Send function.

What is a DLL?

Your operating system comes pre-installed with Microsoft DLL’s and most third party programs also install DLL’s.

DLL (Dynamic Link Library) is Microsoft’s implementation of the shared library concept. Meaning there’s a DLL library on your computer and each DLL can be shared among different Microsoft and third party programs. This shared library method helps your computer run faster by having fewer operations running at the same time.

When a DLL is missing or corrupt it may show an error message and programs may fail or crash.

Because DLL’s are shared, one missing or corrupt DLL may affect multiple programs on your computer.
