Error Fix for imgutil.dll

What is a DLL?

DLL (Dynamic Link Library) files contain computer code and resources that can be used by multiple programs at the same time. This uses less system memory and helps your computer system run more efficiently. DLL files give program developers the ability to reuse code to add features to several programs without the need to write new code for each program.

There are many programs that require DLL files to function properly so when one of them is damaged or missing it will cause program crashes and poor system performance.

What is imgutil.dll?

The imgutil.dll file is a functionality that provides image decoder plug-in support for Internet Explorer. It provides support for pluggable image types. It invokes the pngfilt.dll file and includes other common graphics utilities.

The imgutil.dll module is responsible for the decoding and display of images in Internet Explorer. It generates an in-memory representation of a decoded image using the stream of data that results from reading a supplied URL. This DLL purely consists of cross-platform code that provides imaging decoding and decompression, caching of decoded images, and color-space conversion.

The functionality of the imgutil.dll module does not include the actual display of images, such as painting pixels on the monitor or printer. Logically this code should be part of the image library but as a result of historical decisions the image display code is commingled with other platform-specific display code in each of the front-ends

The interface between the generic image library code and the imgutil.dll file for a particular image format is a relatively simple one. It is possible to modularize image decoders and dynamically load them in much the same way that browser plug-ins are handled. This would allow third parties to add new image formats that could be handled by <IMG> tags. This image plug-ins could take advantage of the image library services such as color-space conversion, caching, and display so that a plug-in need only supply the raw image decoding code. Unlike existing plug-ins that uses platform-specific APIs for their display, the imgutil.dll file is cross-platform so that when assuming reasonable coding practices it merely needs to be recompiled for each platform.

The image is not decoded for each request. A single image URL may be used countless of times on a webpage. A cache of previously decoded and sized images is kept and each image’s information is kept in a data structure called an image container. When an image request is issued the imgutil.dll file searches through the cache to find a matching image container. If it finds one it uses the previously decoded data but if not it decodes the image data and creates a new image container that is added to the image cache for future use.

Recommended fix if you are experiencing imgutil.dll error messages:
