kdcsvc.dll Error Fix

What is a DLL?

DLL (Dynamic Link Library) files contain computer code and resources that can be used by multiple programs at the same time. This uses less system memory and helps your computer system run more efficiently. DLL files give program developers the ability to reuse code to add features to several programs without the need to write new code for each program.

There are many programs that require DLL files to function properly so when one of them is damaged or missing it will cause program crashes and poor system performance.

What is kdcsvc.dll?

Kdcsvc.dll serves as a Key Distribution Center and manages shared and private keys for validation of access to applications and network sessions. These keys are pieces of information or parameters that control the operation of encryption, decryption, digital signatures, and message authentication codes.

Kdcsvc.dll is used by Windows as part of its security features relating to authentication. One of the key authentication concepts developed by Microsoft is known as the Security Support Provider Interface (SSPI). The SSPI permits applications to use different security models available on the computer or network without varying the method of interface to the security system. A part of the SSPI package is the Microsoft Kerberos which is a protocol that defines how clients communicate with a network authentication service. Kdcsvc.dll is one of the components of this protocol. Kdcsvc.dll provides tickets to the clients and when connections are established the clients present these tickets to the server as validation.

Implemented as a domain service kdcsvc.dll uses the active directory as its account database where it provides the authentication service and ticket granting service. These services issue tickets for connection to the network and the computers on that network. As a part of the Kerberos authentication system kdcsvc.dll is responsible for providing tickets to clients.

In Windows Server 2003 the DLL kdcsvc.dll interacts with the Kerberos Access Point through the kerberos.dll module in the Client Application. The kerberos.dll module is a security support provider that implements a standard protocol used with either a password or a smart card for interactive logon. In this process the kdcsvc.dll application implements the Kerberos authentication protocol in the Local Security Authority Subsystem or LSASS process on domain controllers. When the username and password information is validated the kdcsvc.dll application returns domain credentials to LSASS. The result of the authentication is returned together with the user’s domain logon credentials across the network to the system where the logon is taking place.

Recommended fix if you are experiencing kdcsvc.dll error messages:

To fix these problems the user must replace the damaged file with a valid working version. If a working version cannot be found the user may perform a reinstallation of their operating system.
