What is a DLL?
DLL (Dynamic Link Library) files contain computer code and resources that can be used by multiple programs at the same time. DLL files allow program developers to reuse code to add features to several programs without the need to write all new code for each one.
Many programs depend on DLL files to function properly so when one is corrupted or missing it leads to program errors and poor system performance.
What is msmapi32.dll?
Msmapi32.dll is the messaging program interface for 32 bit applications and is a parallel implementation of the 16 bit MAPI functions. MAPI (Messaging Application Program Interface) is an extensive set of functions that are used by developers to create mail-enabled programs and has messaging architecture that allows multiple programs to interact with multiple messaging systems seamlessly across a variety of hardware platforms.
Program writers have the option of making MAPI calls either directly through the MAPI programming interface or indirectly through one of the three client interfaces available namely Simple MAPI, CMC, or the CDO library. These three client interfaces are intended for messaging aware and messaging enabled client programs.
When a MAPI client program needs to send a document it loads the appropriate MAPI dll file and calls for the defined MAPI functions. Msmapi32.dll handles the routing of the messaging and authentication requests to the corresponding MAPI server displaying the address book user interface and returning address book and messaging data to the MAPI client program.
