msvfw32.dll Error Fix

What is a DLL?

DLL (Dynamic Link Library) files contain computer code and resources that can be used by multiple programs at the same time. This uses less system memory and helps your computer system run more efficiently. DLL files give program developers the ability to reuse code to add features to several programs without the need to write new code for each program.

There are many programs that require DLL files to function properly so when one of them is damaged or missing it will cause program crashes and poor system performance.

What is msvfw32.dll?

The DLL msvfw32.dll file supports video files that run on Windows 32-bit platforms. This module is where bitmap compression and decompression routines are implemented to play videos on Windows.

Video data are processed by the msvfw32.dll file and loads it into a video device such as DirectShow or ActiveMovie. The components stored in the msvfw32.dll play essential functions to run high-quality videos in 32-bit versions. These video versions were introduced by Microsoft to replace video for Windows 1.0 that is shipped with Windows 3.x which are usually available by FTP. The essential functions contained in the msvfw32.dll file are DRAWDIB, Installable Compression Manager or ICM, and MCI Windows components of Video for Windows. These components are combined with the functions provided by other DLLS used to run video files such as the avifil32.dll file.

In the introduction of Windows 95 one of its most praised features is the upgrading of the videos for Windows. The functionalities of the msvfw32.dll module were built into the core of Windows 95 to allow seamless and handy video data processing through DirectShow or similar multimedia applications. The 32-bit versions of video for Windows provide functions for rendering a DIB directly from memory onto a device context. With the msvfw32.dll file the operating system need not create an intermediate GDI DIB section or memory device context to process video files.

Consequently independent hardware manufacturers with limited development resources choose the functionalities offered by the msvfw32.dll file in creating video files. Their reason is that video for Windows drivers will operate without errors on all legacy software and operating systems as well as on the newer software that are based on DirectShow and the new Windows Driver Module (WDM).

This DLL is loaded by default on Windows NT 3.5, 3.51 and Windows NT 4.0. The video files for Windows 95 and for Windows NT share codes and are hence both supported by the msvfw32.dll file. This version has 32-bit versions of the video for Windows codecs such as Cinepak.
