Error fix for newdev.dll

All user-interface aspects of device installation are executed by functions in the newdev.dll module. To add new hardware devices to the system the user calls on the Loadlibrary function on the newdev.dll module.

The newdev.dll module is called through the rundll32.exe from the User-mode Plug-and-Play Manager (umpnpmgr.dll). It implements the new device installation dialog box on Windows specifically the dialog box that lists the device category.

It allows a user who wants to install a new hardware by opening the dialog box and listing the manufacturers and their devices when the user clicks “Next”. It also handles subsequent actions such as when the user selects the “Have disk” button and then clicks “Next.”

The primary function on the newdev.dll module is the InstallSelectedDriver function. This installs the selected driver on the selected device in the Windows DDK. It is capable of retrieving the selected device by calling the SetupDiGetSelectedDevice function on the DeviceInfoSet parameter and on the selected device. The newdev.dll file makes use of the SP_DEVINFO_DATA structure to call on the SetupDiSetSelectedDevice function.

The API used by the file newdev.dll to call on the InstallSelectedDriver function is not present in any header files. It is necessary to have the LoadLibrary function as well as the GetProcAddress function for callers to be able to use the InstallSelectedDriver API.

The InstallSelectedDriver function must be used only when a user wants to use a specific driver for a specific device. If not then it would be better to use the UpdateDriverForPlugAndPlayDevices function because it installs the best driver in a particular INF on all devices in the computer that match the specified hardware ID.

A selected driver for a selected device will be installed by the InstallSelectedDriver function in the newdev.dll file when it receives a DeviceInfoSet parameter. This parameter is a caller-supplied HDEVINFO handle that should be used only with a valid DeviceInfoSet call that has a selected driver for a device.

What is a DLL?

DLL (Dynamic Link Library) files contain computer code and resources that can be used by multiple programs at the same time. This uses less system memory and helps your computer system run more efficiently. DLL files give program developers the ability to reuse code to add features to several programs without the need to write new code for each program.

There are many programs that require DLL files to function properly so when one of them is damaged or missing it will cause program crashes and poor system performance.

Recommended fix if you are experiencing newdev.dll error messages:

DLL files are important parts of your operating system and many programs require them to function. When these files become damaged or are missing it causes poor system performance and system crashes.
