rtm.dll Error Fix

What is a DLL?

DLL (Dynamic Link Library) files contain computer code and resources that can be used by multiple programs at the same time. This uses less system memory and helps your computer system run more efficiently. DLL files give program developers the ability to reuse code to add features to several programs without the need to write new code for each program.

There are many programs that require DLL files to function properly so when one of them is damaged or missing it will cause program crashes and poor system performance.

What is rtm.dll?

The rtm.dll file is included in all Windows platforms that have routing and remote access functionalities. These include all Windows operating systems XP and newer as well as Windows Server 2000 and newer. The rtm.dll module functions as the main repository where routing information is deposited including routing components and protocols like router managers. This routing technology manages data flow among network segments which are also known as subnets.

Routing and remote access are add-on network services that combines support for remote access with the functionality of network routing. RRAS (Routing and Remote Access Services) performs routing operations required to be able to connect to WAN (Wide Area Network) or LAN (Local Area Network) connections. This provides services such as access to a server for dial-up service and VPN (Virtual Private Network). In addition to this it provides services to an IP (Internet Protocol) or IP router so you can connect to a private network via subnets. Rtm.dll also has a NAT (Network Address Translator) to be able to connect a private network to an internet connection.

The rtm.dll module is used by the routing and remote access service to maintain the user mode route table for all its routes coming from all possible route resources. Rtm.dll also provides an API (Application Programming Interface) to be able to add or delete routes used by routing protocols. It queries and modifies routing information that is stored in the RTM. The ftm.dll file also registers routes and lists received notifications of the changes made to the RTM. It also gives routing information to management programs, routing protocols, and other monitoring programs.

The rtm.dll forwards the best routes to the right IP forwarder driver. The best IP route is the one that is based on the lowest cost on specific criteria like how many networks are crossed, the type of network crossed, and whether it is private or public, and has a bandwidth limit.

Suggested fix if you are receiving rtm.dll error messages:

To fix these problems the user must replace the damaged file with a valid working version. If a working version cannot be found the user may perform a reinstallation of their operating system.
