Error Fix For sfc.dll

What is a DLL file?

DLL is short for Dynamic Link Library and is a file containing computer code that can be used by multiple programs at the same time. DLL files allow programers to reuse the code in them to add functions to several programs without having to write new code for each one.

There are many programs that rely on DLL files to function so when you have a damaged or missing DLL file it will cause error messages and program crashes.

What is sfc.dll?

Sfc.dll is the System File Checker library and is also known as the Windows File Protection DLL. This file contains functions that monitor system files for validity and prevents programs from replacing critical Windows files. Programs must not overwrite these files because they are used by the operating system as well as other programs.

The sfc.dll module protects critical system files that are a part of the Windows operating system such as .DLL, .EXE, .OCX, and .SYS file extensions as well as some true type fonts. This DLL uses the file signatures and catalog files that are generated by code signing to verify if protected system files are the correct Microsoft versions.

If a program uses a different method to replace protected files the sfc.dll will restore the original files to maintain system stability. The Windows installer will always default to this DLL when installing critical system files and calls on it with a request to install or replace the protected file instead of trying to install or replace the protected file itself.

The sfc.dll provides protection for system files using two mechanisms. The first runs in the background and is triggered after the module receives a directory change notification for a file located in a protected directory. Once the sfc.dll receives this request it will determine which file was changed. If the file is protected the sfc.dll file looks up the file signature in a catalog file to determine if the new file is the correct version. If the file is not the correct version the DLL will replace the new file with the file from the cache folder or from the installation source.

The second protection mechanism that is provided by the sfc.dll is the System File Checker tool which scans all protected files on the system to make sure that they have not been modified by programs that were installed using an unattended installation. The System File Checker tool also checks all the catalog files that are used to track the correct file versions. If any of these catalog files are missing or damaged the DLL renames the affected catalog file and retrieves a cached version of that file from the cache folder. If a cached copy of the catalog file is unavailable the sfc.dll will request the appropriate media to retrieve a new copy of the file.

Recommended fix if you are experiencing sfc.dll error messages:

This DLL is a key part of the core Windows operating system and if it is damaged or missing there is a chance your operating system will not start. If the corrupted file is found before the system crashes the user may replace it with a valid working copy. If a valid copy cannot be found then the only readily available fix to a novice user will be to reinstall your operating system.
