wiaservc.dll Error Fix

What is a DLL?

DLL (Dynamic Link Library) files contain computer code and resources that can be used by multiple programs at the same time. This uses less system memory and helps your computer system run more efficiently. DLL files give program developers the ability to reuse code to add features to several programs without the need to write new code for each program.

There are many programs that require DLL files to function properly so when one of them is damaged or missing it will cause program crashes and poor system performance.

What is wiaservc.dll?

The module wiaservc.dll stands for Windows Image Acquisition Service. It provides services for still image capture and interfaces for image manipulation and use. The first platform to support WIA was Windows ME and has been ported to Windows XP and expanded to provide broader interface features and additional device support. These user interface features of WIA include the Picture and Fax viewer, Image Printing, and Web Publishing.

The Picture and Fax Viewer is a shell feature in Windows XP that supports the wiaservc.dll application by providing an interface to view multiple image formats such as BMP, DIB, EMF, GIF, JPEG, PNG, TIF, and WMF.

On Windows XP the new feature of the wiaservc.dll file is the Photo Printing Wizard which solves the problem of printing multiple images on a single page including a contact sheet format. This wizard is started by selecting Print from Image Preview or by choosing Print when you right-click a picture in Windows Explorer.

A generic host called the svchost.exe process in Windows XP and the stimon.exe process in Windows ME hosts the wiaservc.dll application. It communicates with one or more user-mode still image drivers each of which communicates with a particular type of kernel-mode driver.

The wiaservc.dll file is not installed by default. When a user attaches a still image device such as a digital camera, scanner, etc. to a Windows 2000 host the file is automatically installed through plug-n-play. The wiaservc.dll application consists of the following components. A Still Image Event Monitor, which monitors all installed still image devices and receives notification when still image device events occur. It also keeps track of all registered applications and can start an application when an event is detected.

A set of vendor-supplied user-mode still image mini-drivers that can detect device activity and notify the Still Image Event Monitor of that activity through still image device events. These mini-drivers also pass image data from kernel-mode drivers to upper level software.

A Scanner and Camera Control Panel which allows users to assign specific still image device events to specific applications so that the Still Image Event Monitor will know which application to start when it detects an event.
