OnlineGuard is a rogue security application that is nearly an exact copycat version of DrProtection, which was also copied from DrAntiSpy. It made its way onto users’ computers in November of 2007.
OnlineGuard will attempt to goad users into buying the “license” or “full version” of its program by delivering a flurry of unwarranted security alerts and system scans that produce false results. The scan results are replete with threats that do not exist or were actually placed by OnlineGuard in the first place! Attempting to remove the threats from the false results will only induce more prompting to purchase a “full version” of the product. Spending one penny on this fakeware is too much. Do not be taken in by its threats and intimidation.
Some additional symptoms of infection, aside from the pop-ups and system scans, are a decrease in system performance, spotty Internet connection and uninitiated changes to programs or files.
There are several ways that a user can become infected with OnlineGuard. Visiting less than safe websites, downloading shareware or freeware programs and using peer-2-peer software are some of the ways that one can find this nuisance on their system.
