WindOptimizer

To get straight to the point, WindOptimizer is a scam. A rogue security program was developed by criminals to fool unsuspecting users into spending money on a useless product. It infects computers through Trojan horses that download and install the “trial” version without the user’s knowledge or permission. Once installed, it will immediately start a scan of the computer and generate results that only display spurious infections. The user will then be prompted to buy the full version of WindOptimizer, which is worthless and powerless, though it claims to be able to optimize any PC.

If the user doesn’t purchase the full version, they will continue to be harassed with fake scans and deceptive security alerts. Even after the user pays to register the program the alerts and fake scans will continue, the computer’s CPU usage will shoot through the roof, the computer will slow down, the Internet connection will be hindered, and additional malware may be downloaded. On top of this, the user’s credit card information will be in the hands of criminals. That is why WindOptimizer should not be purchased and should be immediately removed upon discovery. In order to remove it manually, kill the following processes:

Contig.exe
unins000.exe

Delete these registry entries:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center “InternetSettingsDisableNotify”
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center “UacDisableNotify”

Delete these files:

Finally, delete these directories:

c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Wind Optimizer
%UserProfile%\Application Data\Wind Optimizer
%UserProfile%\Application Data\Wind Optimizer\db
c:\Program Files\Wind Optimizer
c:\Program Files\Wind Optimizer\db

Though WindOptimizer can be removed by these instructions, it isn’t enough to only remove this malicious program. If the Trojan that downloaded it isn’t removed, then you will find yourself with this rogue again.
